Ebay is using artificial intelligence to help consumers find the same and similar outfits worn by their favourite celebrities. The technology is enabling the platform’s new Shop the Celebrity Look service, launched this week.

Similar to Ebay’s recent collaboration with media and entertainment company Mashable, the shoppable images show a series of items from the eBay’s marketplace, from structured jumpsuits and statement tops to office wardrobe.

Murray Lambell, vice president of UK trading at eBay, said to Internet Retailing: “Our latest pilot creates a simplified yet appealing shopping experience that brings clothing to life in a new and exciting way. We know that celebrity style shopping leads to high engagement and now, visitors will be able to shop the latest celebrity trends, brands and luxe items for less.”

Ebay has been trying to build the platform’s fashion credentials in response to Amazon’s increased investment in the clothing category. But whilst Amazon is currently focused on attracting premium and higher end brands, Ebay features brand stores from more affordable brands, like Deichmann, Boohoo, and Superdry.

The celebrity shopping pilot is run in partnership with consumer magazine and digital platform Time Inc, and based on different trends, like neutrals, 70’s style dresses and pleated skirts, featured on four shoppable images of celebrities.
