Global color authority Pantone has deemed the hue, described as a "naturally robust and earthy wine red," as the shade to watch for the coming year.

Said to enrich the mind, body and soul and exude confidence and stability, the red was a hit on the runways this spring, featured by designers such as Daniel Silverstain, Hervé Léger by Max Azria and Dennis Basso. It is also a popular choice for jewelry and fashion accessories, including handbags, hats, footwear and the burgeoning market of wearable technology.

In terms of interiors, Marsala provides a unifying element for indoor spaces, adding a plush elegance to any room through accent pieces and accessories such as rugs and upholstered living room furniture. It works particularly well in the kitchen and dining room as it is ideal for tabletop pieces and linens, and we can expect it to be prominent in striping and floral patterns found in printed bedding and throws.

The shade combines dramatically with neutrals such as warmer taupes and grays, and is highly compatible with amber, umber and golden yellows as well as teal greens and vibrant blues.

"Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
