Boots launches eco-friendly tights made from plastic bottles

Beauty retailer Boots has decided to take recycling into its own hands by launching a new brand of tights made from plastic bottles.

The offering will help recycle 86,000 plastic bottles per year, based on the number of bottles that go into each tight made and sales projection for the year.

Coming in four different sizes (S,M, L, XL) in 80 denier, the black opaque tights will be priced at £8.50. Customers can find the range online as well as in select stores from 16 March.

Boots said each pair of tights is made using four plastic bottles, which are shredded into micro-particles, melted down and spun into yarn. The yarn is then knitted to produce durable tights. No nylon is used in the process.

With the launch, Boots UK becomes one of the first retailers to bring tights of this kind to the high street. The health and cosmetics chain has been upping its sustainability efforts of late, and even switched from plastic to paper bags last year. Some stores have also introduced refillable water stations, and the number of sustainable products has been increased to over 150.
