Gap Inc. has announced that Nancy Green, who currently leads the Athleta brand, will take on a newly created role as president and chief creative officer of Old Navy in early August.

In the role, Green will lead Old Navy’s design, production, merchandising and marketing functions, and will report to Sonia Syngal, Old Navy president and CEO. The role will mark her third senior leadership assignment with the Old Navy brand.

Green has held multiple roles with Gap Inc. over the course of her career. Roles prior to her appointment as president and CEO of Athleta in 2013 included executive vice president, executive advisor to the CEO, China, Gap Inc.; executive vice president, interim co-leader of Old Navy; and chief creative officer, executive vice president of Old Navy, amongst others.

Outside of the Gap family, Green has served as executive vice president and general merchandising manager of Pottery Barn -- a Williams-Sonoma-owned company formerly owned by Gap -- as well as CEO of Shabby Chic, Rachel Ashwell Designs, Inc.

“[Green’s] ability to drive growth is demonstrated by Athleta’s success,” said Art Peck, president and CEO of Gap Inc. “Under her leadership, the brand more than doubled sales with operating margin expansion due to a robust omni-business fueled by a clear brand vision woven throughout product and experiences. Our expectation is for Athleta to reach $1 billion in sales in 2020.”

The appointment comes as Gap Inc. recovers from what it called an ‘extremely challenging’ first quarter, which caused the company to cut its 2019 profit forecast. The quarter's poor results, which analysts suggested were the result of a bland product range, included the biggest drop in same-store sales in at least three years at the company’s Gap brand, as well as an unexpected 1% drop in same-store sales at Old Navy.

Athleta’s leadership team will report to Peck until Green’s replacement is found.
