Giorgio Armani announces environmental goals
Giorgio Armani is stepping up its actions to help the planet. The Italian luxury brand first initiated its commitment to a sustainable development approach in 2016 and has since clearly identified its priorities in annual sustainability reports. Now, the business has gone further by setting environmental objectives to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
Armani Group announced its intentions to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2019) in a press release. This refers to direct emissions and indirect, related emissions caused by the energy required to manufacture its products. In addition, the business has committed to reducing its Scope 3 GHG emissions, which are all other types of emissions, especially referring to those caused by downstream services, transport, and distribution, by 42% by 2029, also compared to in 2019.
The business has specified that these concrete objectives have been, “validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.” This is a joint initiative by the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the World Wildlife Fund and helps companies to determine a route towards reducing their carbon emissions.
“The measures announced by Giorgio Armani are in line with the objective of limiting global warming to a level below 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, as stipulated in the Paris agreement of 2015,” said the group. Although Giorgio Armani has been interested in sustainable development for several years, this is the first time it has directly commented on the subject.
“I am especially proud of this important step which is a testament to the group’s determination to continue along the path it has started,” said Giorgio Armani, noting how complicated such an approach is to put into place.
“The fight against climate change is a very complex undertaking which requires great dedication and must span across the entire production process. The concept of sustainability, in fact, must be adopted at all levels by producing less and producing better, by selecting raw materials which have a low environmental impact, by constantly implementing innovative processes, by reducing waste and rejects, by using sources of renewable energy, and in this way reducing our emissions that are harmful to our planet,” said Armani.
Armani Group is not the only luxury brand active on this front. Gucci, Kering, and LVMH among others have also shared their sustainable objectives in recent years.
