Brands and manufacturers have been pulling out all the stops to reverse denim’s huge impact on the environment and the latest initiative is from I And Me, which has just unveiled its first biodegradable denim collection.

I And Me

The premium brand has already produced a succession of season-neutral sustainable collections, but the launch of biodegradable products marks a new step in its eco journey.

The collection is called Better With U and was inspired by the baggy silhouettes of the late 1980s and early 90s. The company said it “tells the story of early Britpop culture through core baggy fits, styled with classic Adidas Spezials”.

It added that it works with “the right manufacturers, mills and suppliers who champion sustainable processes and authentic techniques”.

The brand is using an organic cotton/hemp selvedge denim available in rinse indigo, vintage and bleach; a textured beige selvedge denim from Japanese mill Collect, based in the denim district of Kojima, Okayama; and a cotton/linen stripe, produced on antique jacquard looms, available in both natural and indigo colour ways.

The denim is biodegradable because the metal components that prevent this on most denim can be unscrewed. The company also uses natural threads rather than synthetic ones.

And as well as the new denim, it has also launched its first-ever seamless zero-waste knitwear line, produced in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and a new range of 100% organic cotton T-shirts in short and long sleeve versions.
