"The museum will close its doors for expansion and renovation works, which will last until 2020," said the Belgian museum on its website, across an orange banner announcing the news of the closure.

"The MoMu will remain active, with more information available in May."

The announcement comes at a time when the exhibition dedicated to Margiela's 'Hermès years', which was curated by the MoMu in 2017,is currently on show in Paris at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Until September 2, some 98 looks retracing the work of the Hermès designer are on display.

In addition to the 15,000 books and archive references that make up the museum's catalogue, the ModeMuseum Antwerp houses as many as 33,000 exclusive fashion pieces, either purchased, on loan or gifted.

"That makes the MoMu collection the largest and most important collection of contemporary Belgian fashion in the world," said the museum.
