According to a survey conducted by Citi Research, not only is Nike the leader in the sales of sporting goods in the world, but now also in in Europe, traditionally the turf of German company Adidas. The report is based on a survey of 185 European retailers, 56% of who say that Nike has gained market share, and 34% saying that Nike's gain is Adidas's loss.

For fiscal year 2013 ended December 31, Adidas reported that its sales for Western Europe declined by 7% (6% at constant exchange rates), a result that falls under the 4 billion euro mark at exactly 3.8 billion euros. The weak performance is mainly due to three markets: the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain.

At the announcement of its results for the second quarter in December, Nike reported sales for Western Europe had increased 18% and orders by 26 %. Its third quarter results are highly anticipated, scheduled to be announced March 20.
