ReMode, UBM’s new event for sustainable and disruptive fashion, has teamed up with the United Nations Office for Partnerships and the Conscious Fashion Campaign, and will be hosting an activation at Coterie’s upcoming New York show to celebrate the collaboration.

The partnership will see ReMode support and promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), described by Lucie Brigham, chief of office at the UN Office for Partnerships, as “an unprecedented, universally endorsed blueprint for fighting poverty, ending inequality and protecting the planet,” in a release.

Accordingly, the ReMode outpost at Coterie will showcase a wide range of brands that are working in different ways to promote sustainability, combat inequality and raise awareness of both environmental and humanitarian issues in the apparel industry.

As part of the initiative, a number of female-owned African brands will also be participating in the Coterie activation via SheTrades, an ITC-run organization which supports women entrepreneurs. Without a doubt, the headliner of the line-up is Lagos-based Maki Oh, led by designer Amaka Osakwe, whose collections featuring creative use of the traditional Nigerian indigo-dyed fabric adire have garnered her high-profile fans including Michelle Obama and Beyoncé.

Coterie Women’s Fashion Director Danielle Licata also picked out some of her own favorites, highlighting Aaks’ colorful bags, CocoLili’s easy-to-wear apparel offering, and Tilayo’s bold accessories.

“We think that you will fall in love with the product first and then the brand story cements the reason why you want to buy this brand over another similar one,” she told FashionNetwork.com. “It’s incredibly powerful that by simply purchasing a dress or pair of earnings you’re playing a role in giving women and their families a brighter future half way around the world.”

Later this month, ReMode will be continuing its collaboration with the UN, taking part in the United Nations General Assembly 73rd Session SDG Media Zone. Licata was also keen to point out that the partnership is part of a wider sustainability strategy being implemented across all of UBM’s shows.

“Many people are unaware but we have in fact been working on the promotion and education of conscious collections and ethical fashion for several seasons now in our Las Vegas women’s show, Project Womens, and the brand roster grows each edition,” she said. “On a corporate level at UBM/Informa we have very measured sustainable goals for all our events so we can start to be more conscious ourselves.”

Coterie will take place at the Jacob Javits Center, NYC, September 15 through 17.
