Amazon said Thursday that it has promoted Ruth Diaz to oversee its European fashion business after nine years working in several marketing and retail leadership positions at the online retail giant.

Amazon Fashion Europe's new head is Ruth Diaz

It’s a key role and will see her working with the European Consumer senior leadership team to head up “all aspects of the business, including responsibility for growing selection and improving customer experience across the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain”.

Her promotion comes as John Boumphrey, who was previously Vice-President of Amazon Fashion Europe, is moving to become the UK Country Manager for the company.

Amazon has been increasing its presence in the fashion sector every year and as well as the huge selection of brands and own-brands now available on the site, recent launches from the company include Savage x Fenty vol.2, The Drop, StyleSnap and Amazon Fashion Connects.

Diaz said it’s “an exciting time to be taking on this role, with more [developments] to come”.

With online having been a growing force in retail for over two decades, it’s significant that Diaz has spent a significant chunk of her career working for online businesses.

As mentioned, she’s held multiple roles at Amazon itself and was previously responsible for more than 20 product categories at its Spanish and Italian sites, as well as leading the Home Innovation Program for Europe.

Before starting at the firm, she ran online fashion company BuyVip that Amazon acquired in 2010. And prior to that she was CEO at online entertainment company Entradas.com. She’s also worked at Universal Pictures and PriceWaterHouse Coopers in Spain.
