Scotch & Soda spring 2017 collection titled, ‘The World According to Heavenly Creatures’, debuted at New York Fashion Week at the Angel Orensanz Center for the arts, the second NYFW presentation for the brand. The Amsterdam-based company transformed the venue, which was formerly a synagogue, into a wondrous landscape that was part rainforest pond and part desert.

The pond oasis sat in the front of the show where whimsical pieces in shades of green and gold were on display. The looks featured bold, bar stripes, floral patterns, star patterns on metallic culottes and leopard prints suited for a jungle. Sheer and metallic styles were the focal points and were an interesting interpretation of a natural habitat.

Behind the pond was a dry climate featuring ruffle shirts and dresses in silk, paper-bag waist trousers, embroidery and gaucho influences and details. Creative Director Marlou van Engelen finished many looks with a creature-eye-motif that was most evident two women’s looks.

The men’s collection retained the women’s color palette, but it was much more subdued. The sleeveless capes in black, green and white were very unique and allowed for maxi batik and bloom prints to show out.

Van Engelen was inspired by illustrations by Dutch astrologer and cartographer, Peter Plancius that date back to 1590. She said, “He mapped the world according to the animals he found there. This find sparked us to see the world through different eyes – through the eyes of nature’s creatures.”

The spring 2017 show coincides with the company’s first-ever global brand campaign, ‘From Amsterdam, From Everywhere’, a nod to the company’s roots in Amsterdam.
