Thom Browne launches childrenswear

Feb 1, 2021

New York-based designer Thom Browne is taking his classic schoolboy uniform look to actual schoolboys—and schoolgirls—with the launch of his eponymous line's new childrenswear.

Thom Browne Childrenswear - Thom Browne/Cass Bird

The line's pieces tailor all of the brand's classic items for men and women—fitted blazers, cardigans, crisp white button-downs, ties and tie bars, tapered trousers, pleated skirts, knee socks, brogues and penny loafers—down to pre-teen size.

"Thom Browne childrenswear features signature styles of the same make and quality as all of Thom Browne’s collections, from tailoring to knits to footwear," the brand said on its website. "The essentials that define Thom Browne continue to be the basis for childrenswear collection. uniform pieces from the Thom Browne adult wardrobe now in miniature include the medium grey super 120s wool twill suit, chesterfield overcoat with velvet top collar, classic cardigan with four-bar, and the white classic oxford shirt."

"Beyond that, there are the “friday uniform” pieces such as the navy super 120s twill sport coat with gold buttons and the university stripe grosgrain armband shirt with round collar," the brand continued. "Additional styles include classic sweats with four-bar in loopback jersey, and further exploration into down archetypes with a ripstop vest and puffer jacket with four-bar."

The line's prices range from $265 to $428 for shirts; $300 to $315 for long and short-sleeved t-shirts; $640 to $905 for knits; $1,074 to $1,550 for outerwear; $591 to $785 for skirts and pants; $420 to $520 for footwear; and tailoring starting at $1,074.

The label debuted the new line during its slot on the official calendar of Paris Men’s Fashion Week with a short film directed by Cass Bird, who also shot the childrenswear campaign. In the film, a group of young kids in full, shrunken Thom Browne regalia are shown going to work at an office (complete with the Thom Browne signature of white blinds), sitting at identical desks and typing on identical typewriters as a Charlie Brown-esque "womp womp...womp womp womp..." audio seems to play from a speaker above. The children soon abandon their work for paper ball-throwing and playing up until the over two-minute-long film's close.

“The message is so unique..this new story is so Thom Browne," Browne told Bazaar.com. “Now felt like the perfect time to launch childrenswear."

The designer continued, telling Bazaar that "the collection is a classic approach that lets each individual shine” and that it “brings a smile to your face.”

Thom Browne childresnwear is available now and can be viewed on the brand's e-commerce platform.
