This year sees Visa celebrate 30 years of Olympic partnership, and the company has created what it calls the most technologically advanced payment system ever for the Games. It is also sending its largest Team Visa group of athletes to an Olympic Games.

The new payment technologies include the Visa payment ring, which FashionMag has previously reported on and which is given to all 60 Team Visa athletes attending the Games. The ring is the first-ever passive, NFC-enabled, tokenised wearable, one of Visa’s latest innovations.

Visa has also created The Swatch Bellamy Watch. This is a collaboration with Swatch and the first-ever contactless payment watch available to consumers in Brazil. It can be bought at the Games. For Team GB, Visa created a bPay enabled band that can be used at the 4,000 NFC-enabled POS terminals at the Olympic venues, as well as at contactless payment terminals worldwide.

The company also designed The Pulseira Bradesco Payment Band in association with Brazilian bank, Bradesco. The bands will be distributed to 3,000 select fans, employees and attendees.

Visa has supported more than 300 Olympic Athletes through the Team Visa programme since 2000, and this year Team Visa includes 21 countries represented, plus refugee Olympians. Ten refugee athletes are competing under the Olympic flag at the Games.

Kevin Jenkins, Managing Director for the UK and Ireland, said: “The bravery and determination of these refugee athletes is truly inspiring. Every one of them has overcome overwhelming odds to be in a position to compete on the world’s stage. We are proud to work alongside the International Olympic Committee to provide partnership and to support these athletes.”
